While working with the American Association of Orthodontists (http://braces.org), I’ve heard a lot of rumors about braces… so I thought it was about time to spread the tooth – I mean, the truth, :) about popular braces myths!
Myth: If I kiss someone who has braces, will we get stuck together?
It’s almost impossible to lock braces while kissing. Also, braces are not magnetic—that attraction you feel is pure chemistry!
Myth: Traveling will be a pain—I’ll set off metal detectors at the airport.
Not true! The materials used in braces are so lightweight, they don’t affect detectors.
Myth: Statistically, braces will increase my chance of being struck by lightning.
Whether or not you wear braces, the chance of getting struck by lightning is the same. (If you’re curious, nationalgeographic.com reports your chances are one in 700,000 in any given year in the U.S.)
Anyone else know of other dental legends or jaw-dropping facts? – How about any famous braces wearers (celebrities can’t all be born with perfect teeth!)?
