My son will turn 17 in a few months and he has no desire to get his drivers license. He has had his permit for close to a year now but he refuses to drive enough to show us he has the skills to get his license.

He wants to get a job and that's great but his dad commutes quite a distance to and from work and I run a home business so we can't be shuttling him back and forth. Also every time he wants to see a friend or go to a movie or whatever someone has to take him and pick him up.

I'm getting so frustrated with this, I guess because he won't give us any reasons why, just that he doesn't want to right now.

I don't know if the permit expires after so long but I would think so.

Should I force the issue or just let him progress at his own pace?

That is a challenge! Especially since he doesn't give a reason for why he doesn't want to drive. I'd try to find out that why.

You may want to check on the expiration of the learner's permit. I do think they expire here in Michigan, but my boys were running to get theirs on the first day possible!! My youngest just got his learner's permit yesterday and was waiting for me when I got home so he could "drive."

A few gray hairs later- mission accomplished.

Best of luck to you-

Cathy

There is also a possibility that he just isn't ready to take the test yet.Have patience, he'll get his license in his own time.

Oh yes,
My son just took his road test this past Monday, and passed thankfully, but he wanted it two years ago. lol Actually he still can not legally drive alone except for school and back until he officially turns 17. Some kids run with the idea before their time, and some do not. I can't say I blame him I was the same way when it was time for me to drive too. Back then I took my father's big Cadillac, the nerve I had then, today I would never. lol In those days those were the cars around a lot and they were HUGE. LOL

Perhaps he is actually afraid to drive, or he may be afraid of rejection of not passing his road test. Just a thought. I know almost all kids are afraid of that. Out of curiousity is he a Cancer sign? Silly I know, but I am a Cancer sign and so is my other son.

I don't even want to think of my son driving...LOL. I still have 9 years to go.

That's interesting that he doesn't want to drive though. Maybe he's just worried. Since he does have his permit do you have him drive when he does want you to take him places? Did something happen maybe while he was driving before, a close call or something? or perhaps somebody he knows was in an accident?
