This type of behaviour, especially when coming from a work at home mom, gives all work at home moms a bad rap/name.
I had the same thing happen to me too, but I set up advertising and let them pay monthly which was $5 a month. They paid for the first month and then even though they got lots of clicks they wouldn't pay for the 2nd month after I spent over an hour setting up their account, going back and forth with E-mails etc.

I stopped doing it that way because it wasn't worth $5 for an hour of my time and taking up ad space too.

I am just curious as to the percentage rate roughly that home based business get bad checks? When I sold on ebay I accepted personal checks until I started getting more than one bounced check a month. I am just wondering if anyone that has a home based business that doesn't accept personal checks or if they do what thier policy is if they bounce? Thank you in advance,

There was a time when people actually made "deals" by a simple handshake! It would be great to have that same kind of integrity now a days. It's unfortunate that many people try to get away with something. Since we can't change other people, we do need to be more cautious and make sure we, ourselves, are people of our word.

As was posted, stores do not allow us to buy now and pay later. Utilities are turned off when payment is not received. As small business owners, I believe we need to collect payment up front, or in some cases 1/2 of the total up front and then the remaining 1/2 midway. It is far too easy for a well meaning customer to say at completion "the check is in the mail", which is why services must be paid for in advance.

If setting up an account takes times, why not try $5 per month with a $10 set up charge? Or minimum 3 month committment paid up front?

We, as small business owners, are not banks, nor do we work on credit.

What a great topic!!

The other thing that gets me -It was another WAHM who is in a few businesses too that told me the check was in the mail. I would be embarrassed to lie that like -who wants to do business with someone who makes promises, lies, and doesn't follow through.

I require half down and the other half before the web site gets launched.

I did have one client get so bad with late payments that I threatened to take his web site down. Now he has to pay me in advance for any work I may do for him.

My clients are also beginning to figure out that I have a work priority order - the faster you pay your invoice the faster your web updates tend to get done.
