Default Why Businesses Hire Home Based Workers

Why Businesses Hire Home Based Workers

You might think that with businesses downsizing their employee base - aka laying people off - few if any businesses would be looking for home based workers right now. They just let people go, didn't they?

Here are some reasons why at least some businesses are hiring people who work from home.

Just like all of us, businesses have to cut costs wherever they can. One of the biggest expenses any business has comes under the umbrella of "overhead." Overhead includes facilities, maintenance, personnel, utilities, equipment, etc. If a business can reduce any of those expenses while maintaining the same level of service to its customers, the business stands a better chance of riding out the current recession.

If a business has on-site workers doing routine office tasks, the employer has to provide a place for them to work, equipment for them to work on and with, and pay certain taxes.

On the other hand, if the business hires an independent contractor to work from home, that independent contractor is responsible for having a phone, computer, desk, and everything else needed to do the job. The employer is able to do business from a smaller facility and does not have the expenses of multi-line phones, constantly updated computers, etc.

The independent contractor working from home is responsible for having a phone, computer, office space and equipment, etc. That person also provides their own facility in the form of a space in their home, and pays their own utilities.

The incoming administration (here in the USA) is unlikely to cut taxes or any other expenses for businesses. The fact that the independent contractor working from home is responsible for all of their own taxes, income and otherwise, makes hiring a home based worker all the more attractive for the small business owner.

Many small business owners are looking for just what the home based worker can provide and when a good match is found, both parties are delighted with the outcome. Small business owners often don't need full time employees, and many home based workers are only looking for part time work so they can devote more time to family needs. Some people seeking to work from home are actually professionals with college degrees in fields like English, Graphic Arts, or Software Design. Others have no specific degree but are skilled users of basic office software and/or have wonderful customer service telephone skills.

Whatever the needs and whatever the skills, there is a small business owner and a home based worker out there somewhere just waiting to find each other!
