Type of Products/Services Offered:
Educational Books and Music for Enhancing Speech and
Language with Children
Start Up Cost: $ 15,000
What did start up
costs go for ?: I hired a good marketing
consultant and graphic artist. Start-up costs mostly
went for printing and production of my music CD in
Nashville.
Earning Potential: $20,000 / year
Skills Needed: Degree in the field in which
you plan to write books. Some musical knowledge
helps when it comes to a recording session. I found
that html programming was easy to learn and a very
handy skill to have in getting my website up and
running.
Special Equipment Needed: Very low investment
risk, because others print and produce the products.
You just need a website/1-800 number and merchant
account to take orders.
Best Customers/Target
Market: Parents, mothers, preschool teachers,
librarians.
Resources &
Organizations that help : There are cheap
marketing technique books for self published works.
Any Tips?: Get a fantastic idea and be
passionate about sharing it with a large audience.
Be willing to be flexible and listen to your
marketing person. If you don't have time/money to
market a product after you've produced it, then it's
better to submit an idea to a publisher and let them
share in the production costs instead of completing
a work and then shopping publishers. I ended up
getting a publishing deal as well and am happy that
they will be able to help me with marketing since I
am a busy mom with two preschoolers at home. My time
for marketing has to be well spent with corporate
customers instead of a lot of smaller public
appearances. I still plan to produced self published
works from home because I enjoy talking to parents
on the phone, taking orders and knowing that my
products are helping people. I'd love to share more
information about my business with anyone
interested.
