BEING ACCOUNTABLE
IN YOUR BUSINESS
Who are you accountable to? This may sound a bit silly since you are
most likely a responsible mom and business owner. But, it is always a smart idea to have a
fellow work at home mom that you can trust, with whom you can be accountable to for a
variety of issues. You will discover that this will be a great way to gain some
extra support for your business.
Honesty and Integrity - As a business owner you want to strive to achieve
this at all times. There may be instances and circumstances that
arise where your judgment may get clouded. You need someone to bounce
your ideas and problems off of to get their perspective on what is the right thing to do.
Goals and Accomplishments - You and your business peer can help to
encourage each other and keep each other on track with the time frame of
when you want to reach your goals. It is also wonderful to have someone to share your
accomplishments with and to get the extra cheer leading and pats on the back that you may
not get from family at all times.
Time Management - It can be easy to get sidetracked with all you have to
do, and so hard to maintain the balance of family and business. By taking that necessary
"reality check" with your business peer, you can remain focused on what areas
need your highest attention and priority.
By being accountable to a business peer, you are really being accountable to yourself and
your business.
TAKING INVENTORY WITHIN
Have you taken inventory lately? Not physical inventory of your business, but emotional
and spiritual inventory within yourself. Throwing ourselves into the work at home mom mode
sends us many times into a tailspin. We attempt to be superwoman, supermom, and super
business owner. It's impossible to accomplish this without one area of our life suffering.
We've heard it before, numerous times, but do we actually take the following advice:
"Take time for yourself each day."
I don't know about you, but I find that I hardly
have time to sleep 5 hours in a day let alone taking some time to myself. It is one of the
simplest pieces of advice and I think the most important thing that we
need to adhere to if we want to maintain a balance within.
So, start today and create a new habit in your life. Start with just 10 minutes if this is
a new concept to you. I know that to many of you moms this "taking time for
myself" will be a foreign idea. Spend 10
minutes doing something you love to do. It could be reading a magazine, prayer,
listening to your favorite music, writing in your journal, daydreaming, dancing (yes......
I said dancing, this is good exercise too)...the list is endless.
You will find that by taking time for yourself, you will become calmer, more relaxed, and
more at peace with all you are attempting to accomplish on a daily basis.
ENVY AND CHANGE
Do you ever look in envy at a fellow work at
home mom who seems to have it "so" together? You wonder how on earth she
is able to run a successful business, have perfectly well behaved children, a house that
is immaculately clean AND wear that size 8 that you know you'll never see again. (I
think I'm seeing a tinge of green just writing this!)
It's hard not to compare yourself to others that
are in the same arena as you - being a work at home mom. But comparing can be
detrimental and at times downright depressing. There is a difference between
comparing and observing to learn.
We all come from different places and have been
given unique gifts and strengths. What we thrive at may be someone else's weakness
and vice versa. Realize that you are who you are, but that you can improve in
different areas. Remember that we all have our downfalls and specific areas that we
need improvement in. Nothing is wrong with that. What is wrong is when you
think that you don't measure up and just throw in the towel.
No one is perfect and believe me, no ones life
smells of roses all the time. If you like what you see in someone else, don't try to
clone that person, but instead learn from them and bring your own personality and
individuality into the characteristic or quality.
Envy, no...desire to evolve, yes.
